Gordon Piland ~ Medical Marijuana Activist

gordon_piland_asheville_2015

Gordon was born and raised in Winston-Salem.  His parents were courageous God fearing people who fed our souls and bodies with love and music and truth.

After finishing high school, he went to the US Naval Academy at Annapolis where I graduated in 1969.  He served as a Naval Officer in Florida, the North Atlantic and in California.

Gordon then graduated from Wake Forest Medical School in 1977 and then completed a Family Practice Residency at the University of Western Ontario in 1979.

Gordon was practicing in a clinic on Hatteras Island in 1980, when a patient enquired about using marijuana for the nausea of her chemotherapy.  Having had some experience with cannabis throughout medical school, I knew it to be relatively harmless and safe to try and so related this to her.  She said she didn’t know where to get some.  I thus decided to grow some for her, as her physician.

Gordon was arrested for felonious gardening in August of 1980.  The charges were going to be dropped because of no search warrant but he pushed for a trial to get some of the suppressed truth regarding the plant out.

So began his 35 year journey with Cannabis…

Enjoy this one hour episode of Living Well with Gordon who shares about the sacred nature of cannabis and the many health benefits of the plant.

Alon Kaplan ~ Stroke Survivor and founder of AlonTree

25517_366852155099_6696859_n

About seven years ago at the age of 40, Alon was in a car accident that led to a massive, catastrophic stroke. He sank into a medical coma and doctors were uncertain he would survive.  When he eventually awoke, Alon could not speak and was hemiplegic, paralyzed on his right side.  Then began his long and difficult journey of rehabilitation and recovery.

Alon quickly learned that there were limited rehabilitation/physical therapy options with many seemingly pointless with equipment that was poorly made, and failed to do what he really needed. In the spring of 2011, Alon questioned his half-paralyzed body and damaged brain and asked, “How can I be whole again?”.  It was then Alon  envisioned the vital equipment that would help him become whole, and AlonTree Company was born.  With regular use of the equipment he built, Alon learned to “fix” the muscle groups that affected half of his body and learned once again to talk, walk, climb stairs, and move his arms.

This Thursday, December 3rd, Alon will have a crowdfunding kick off party for Alon Tree at the Mothlight with a Silent Auction with donations from local artists; performances by bygone Blues, Melissa Hyman, and Jay Brown as well as a Late Night Dance Party with Michael Hurd; and Alon will tell his story and show off some demos of his designs.

Enjoy this special one~hour episode of Living Well as Alon shares his inspiring story to find his wholeness and the the many lessons he learned along the way.
