Mindy Smith once described herself as a “short, big-built gal” with little interest in exercise until about 2012 when it was brought to her attention that she needed to make some lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of diabetes that runs in the family and address her struggle with weight gain. One day, Mindy saw a little flyer in the YWCA Asheville’s women’s locker room that said, “want to run your first marathon with other newbies?”. So she jumped on board and trained for about 6 months for her first marathon with a small group of amazing souls. Since then, Mindy’s shed almost 60 pounds, and made running a part of her lifestyle and caring for her health. She is now training for her hardest trail running event to-date, the Georgia Death Race on April 1, and in preparation, just tackled a 35-mile snowed-over trail race to start the new year.
