It was supposed to be a temporary move but after his second day here, he fell in love with scenery and all the weird people of Asheville.  A self-taught videographer, A.D. was inspired by a Facebook post, and discovered his passion project ~ “Weighing in with A.D. Weighs“, a video series on thoughtful conversation with people from all walks of life, addressing hard-to-talk-about topics such as racism, police misconduct, suicide, rape culture and toxic masculinity. His guests are “everyday people” culled from friends, acquaintances and those he meets on social media.

Eleanor Underhill ~ 1st solo album release, “Navigate the Madness”

Eleanor Underhill tried her hand at a variety of instruments—piano, trombone, guitar, and ukulele—before settling on the banjo, the instrument that has defined her sound. At age 14, she composed her first song and has since amassed a vast catalogue of music that has supported the creation of five albums with various projects. Her unique open-back banjo style, salty-blues vocals, and prolific writing ability has contributed to the success of her band, Underhill Rose, who has toured nationally and overseas while garnering international acclaim on the Americana scene since its formation in 2009. She has also won top honors at Asheville’s Songwriting Idol Contest, played on a Grammy award winning song by Kid-Hop artist Agent 23 Skidoo, was selected to perform in the Asheville All-Star Band in the summer of 2018, and is a Deering Banjos endorsing artist.

Though collaboration has surely been the cause of much of her success, Underhill felt the burning desire to get her hands on the dials and take a song all the way through the process of writing to recording to producing to mixing to release. In the fall of 2016, Eleanor holed up in her parent’s restored mill house with her modest collection of recording equipment and began tracking a full length album of original material. With the help of a Regional Artist Project Grant, Eleanor is thrilled to releasing her very first solo album—Navigate the Madness—in the fall of 2018. Leaning on the talents of several Asheville musicians (many of them in Eleanor Underhill & Friends) she has created a work that is more adventurous and singular than anything she has done before.

Eleanor & Friends will be performing the entirely of Navigate the Madness at the album release show on October 6th @ Ambrose West. This will be an intimate, not-to-be-missed show as Eleanor will be sharing some of the inspiration behind the songs and the album.

Enjoy this one-hour podcast where Eleanor shares about many inspirations and experiences related to her first solo album and even plays one of her songs live in the AshevilleFM studio.

Bill Fleming ~ Get Off the Grid Festival

Bill has spent most of his adult life either in the pursuit of knowledge about the Earth and its peoples or in sharing with others what he’s learned and observed.  He’s taught at every academic level from primary through tertiary but my most memorable educational experiences have been teaching in newly liberated and developing nations in Central America and Africa. It was while working on development projects in Nicaragua in the 1980s that  he began to appreciate the necessity for renewable energy, localized resource conservation and sustainability in food production. These experiences guide his present activities and vision in relation to self-sufficiency in production of food and energy as well as maintenance of health, wellness and the building of community and a culture of sustainability.

Most recently, his wife and daughters built (with more than a “little help from our friends”) an off-grid home in the Appalachian region of north Georgia. Not without its challenges, the experience has been deeply positive and empowering and has set him on a course to share their experiences, mistakes and successes to enable others to homestead in a way that both provides present material gain and independence while preserving resources for the next generation.

An effective step towards growing this vision has been developing the solar expo and sustainability fair, The Get Off the Grid Festival as a forum, a meeting ground of sorts where people can come together to share, teach and learn about renewable energy and how to approach self-reliance in agriculture, health and community. The event is situated in traditionally underserved rural communities and are commitment to holding these gatherings in a different locale within the Southeast Appalachian region every two years.  Next year’s event will take place at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC and an introduction, aka charrette, of the festival is happening September 30, 2018 at the Salvage Station in Asheville, NC as an opportunity to hear from the residents of the Asheville area their suggestions and vision for a sustainable future.  The festivities begin at noon and there will be live music, local vendors, and a solar and sustainability expo.

Enjoy this one-hour Living Well episode with Bill who has a lot of interesting and insightful things to share about living well through sustainability and community.

Tony spends a lot of time sitting on his zawfu in Big Sur or Asheville. He talks about this stuff to anyone who cares to listen.

Enjoy this hour podcast of Living Well where Tony shares about the many insights and learnings to live well in our lives.  This Thursday, August 30th, 6pm at Malapropos in downtown Asheville.
