Ethnobiologist Marc Williams has taught hundreds of classes and thousands of people about plants, humans other life forms and their interface. His training includes a B.A. in Environmental Studies/Sustainable Agriculture and a M.A. in Appalachian Studies/Sustainable Development. He is the Executive director of Plants and Healers International and has spent over 17 years working at various restaurants, farms, and travels throughout 24 countries in North/Central America and Europe and all 50 of the United States.

Sunya Kjolhede ~ Co-founder & Abbot of Windhorse Zen Community

Sunya Kjolhede (Koalheed) is an ordained Dharma heir of Roshi Philip Kapleau, and along with her husband, Lawson Sachter (Sackter), is the co-founder and abbot of  Windhorse Zen Community. Both Lawson and Sunya have been practicing Zen for over 45 years, and have conducted sesshins (sessheen) and workshops in the United States, Mexico, and abroad.

Sunya, along with her other teaching activities, travels regularly to Poland, where she serves as spiritual director of the Bodhidharma Zen Center, a Polish Zen community founded by Roshi Kapleau in 1975. She has trained in Clinical Pastoral Education, working for a period of time as hospital chaplain, and she has also worked as a professional storyteller.

Sunya and Lawson will be offering a 6-part series, Bringing Zen to Life: Empowering Practice for Challenging Times that begins April 7th at Jubilee! in downtown Asheville.

Matthew Kabat ~ Taiji & QiGong Teacher

Matthew Kabat began studying traditional Zen meditation at age 11. After more than 10 years of training in meditation and Okinawan martial arts he began to study the traditional internal martial arts of China. Over the past 20 years his practice and training has focused on Daoist meditation and healing practices as well as studying and teaching Taiji Quan (Twan) and Xinyi (Shingy) Quan (Twan). The traditional Taiji practice includes moving and stationary meditation, two person sensitivity training including martial arts applications as well as healing and nurturing applications. He offers private and public Taiji classes in the Asheville area.

He currently makes his living as an artist, teacher, writer and maker of things and lives with his family in Asheville NC.

Born Virginia Waite on the 29th of December, 1957,  Ginnie is the middle child of 3 who traveled the world as a child as her father was in space industry.  She moved to Asheville 26 years ago and learned that singing and writing kept her emotionally, physically and spiritually balanced.  She believes in a positive outlook whenever possible,with plenty of introspection and reflection, and that we are all here to grow in our own way and at our own pace. And when life sometimes gets her down, she tries to remember to breathe and eat something good! Ginnie has produced one album of her original work and has plenty of songs ready to go for her second album.

Estelle Woodward Arnal and Jeff Arnal began their collaborative relationship in 1999 while they were in graduate school at Bennington College. In 2000 they moved to Brooklyn, NY where they were active as performers and organizers in the music and dance community.  From 2002-2006 they served as Artistic Co-Directors of Improvised and Otherwise, an annual festival for experimental music and dance in Brooklyn. Their work was presented in New York City at The Chocolate Factory, Danspace Project, Roulette, Movement Research, and the Vision Festival, among others.  Both Jeff and Estelle have held positions with prestigious arts organizations throughout the Northeast including Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, and Dance Theater Workshop.  As consultants their clients have included Big Dance Theater, iLAND inc./Jennifer Monson, National Sawdust, and The Greenwall Foundation.  They bring their combined passion and experience to Free Range Asheville with the goal of contributing thoughtful programs that complement the vibrant cultural community in Asheville.

Free Range Asheville provides a platform for research and discourse where local, national, and international artists can engage and collaborate in performance and laboratory settings with other artists and organizations. The driving force behind the organization’s vision is to create access points to culture that cross disciplines, traditions, and genres for people of all ages and economic backgrounds. Free Range Asheville is a nimble organization that offers programs in a variety of settings ranging from under-utilized commercial spaces, traditional performance venues, and natural environments throughout the Western North Carolina region.

Please join Free Range Asheville on Tuesday February 23, 7pm at the Diana Wortham Theatre for their kick-off event featuring the New York City based, forty two piece, orchestral collective ‘The Knights’. The Knights ignite the concert experience by engaging listeners and defying boundaries with adventurous performances that showcase their expansive repertoire rooted in the classical tradition and passion for artistic innovation. They are also serious about having fun. The Asheville program will include works by Beethoven, Sufjan Stevens, and João Gilberto. Proceeds from the evening will support Free Range Asheville in bringing future cultural events to Asheville.  Tickets are on sale for $10, limited VIP tickets are $30 and will include priority seating and a Free Range Survival Kit.
