Russell Johnson ~ Social & Environmental Activist

APTOPIX_Ferguson-0c203-3101

Russell is an Asheville native who recalls a time when citizens fought to desegregate the Asheville schools.  His mother was active in the movement and made a point to educate and involve Russell in this very important issue.  From an early age, Russell has dedicated his life to bringing social justice for African Americans, a passion that has taken all across this country, and is an active member of Veterans for Peace.

In the wake of the uprising in Ferguson, Missouri when a police officer killed of an unarmed black men, Russell went to Ferguson to report on the story.  Russell fights for social justice became quite personal when police in riot gear forcefully tackled and arrested him, causing significant injuries.  Russell remained in jail for 9 hours and his please for medical care were ignored.  Russell was offered a plea bargain for his admission of guilt but he instead went to court and was found innocent of the charges by a judge; he is now in the process of seeking restitution as a result of the police’s wrongdoings.  When not in the streets fighting for justice, Russell can be found on the AshevilleFM airwaves with his show, Political Alchemy, that airs on Wednesdays, 8-10am.

I hope you enjoy this one-hour Living Well episode where we explore the impact of racism in our country and how we can live well by working toward positive change and embracing the rich diversity that is America.
